Candy Cane Cookies
Ingredients
2 ½ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon red food coloring
½ cup crushed peppermint candy
½ cup granulated sugar
1 cup butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 ½ teaspoons almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Cream together butter, sugar, egg, and extracts.
Mix in salt then flour.
Divide dough in half and add red coloring to one half.
Take 1 teaspoon of each dough and roll each into a 4 inch strip. For smooth, even strips, roll back and forth on a lightly floured board. Place strips side by side, press lightly together and twist like rope. Curve top down to form the handle of candy cane. Do not do one color at a time, but cookie by cookie, otherwise strips become too dry to twist.
Bake about 9 minutes until lightly browned.
While still warm, remove with a spatula to a wire rack and then lightly sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and crushed candy cane.
